Modern manufacturing facilities depend on people, machines, materials, and processes working together without unnecessary delays. However, supervisors cannot always see how employees move across the production floor or how much time is spent at individual machines and workstations. Manual registers, paper-based time sheets, and occasional inspections may provide limited information, but they often fail to show what happens throughout the entire shift.

A worker tracking system gives manufacturers better visibility into workforce activity.

Using technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy beacons, wireless gateways, and tracking software, companies can understand where employees are working, how time is distributed across production areas, and where operational improvements may be required. BeaconTrax provides a Bluetooth-based employee tracking solution that automatically maps hours spent at machines, manufacturing areas, and job sites.

What Is a Worker Tracking System?

A worker tracking system is a digital solution designed to monitor employee presence, movement, and activity within a defined facility. In manufacturing, the system may be used to track production workers, maintenance teams, quality-control staff, contractors, visitors, and warehouse personnel.

Employees can wear small beacons attached to ID badges, hard hats, wristbands, watches, or clothing. Gateways installed around the facility detect signals from these beacons as workers enter or leave specific reading zones. The signals are recorded at regular intervals and transmitted to software, where managers can view real-time or historical information.

Unlike a traditional attendance system, which only records when an employee enters or leaves the premises, a worker tracking system can provide information about activity throughout the workday.

It can help supervisors understand how long workers remain at particular stations, when they move between zones, and whether staffing matches production requirements.

How the System Works
A typical worker tracking system includes three important components: wearable beacons, gateway receivers, and management software.

The beacon is a compact wireless device assigned to an employee. It transmits an identifying signal at regular intervals. Because the device is small and lightweight, it can be attached to a hard hat, clipped to clothing, worn as a wristband, or incorporated into an ID badge.

Gateways are installed at strategic locations throughout the manufacturing facility.

These may include production lines, assembly website areas, packaging sections, warehouses, maintenance rooms, entrances, and restricted zones. When an employee wearing a beacon enters or exits a gateway’s reading area, the gateway detects the signal and sends the information to the tracking platform.
